Daily Notes 06-30-06
The last day of June 2006 — where has the year gone! I’m amazed at how fast time goes by any more. When I was a kid, it seemed the summer lasted FOREVER! And you can’t say it’s because we’re busier now than we were as kids — I was a pretty busy kid! Just ask Mom — I don’t think I ever whined to her that I was bored.
I rode my bike — nothing like nephew Colin’s fancy rig, either — one speed Schwinn with 18 or 20″ wheels. To me, though, that bike was everything. It was my horse, my car, my wings. It was really hard to part with that bike, but what is it they say about putting away childish things?
I’ve never been much of a television watcher — even as a kid. Oh yes, we had our shows that we watched — Star Trek, Twilight Zone, Ed Sullivan, but nothing like kids today watch tv. Reading — that was my escape from reality! First it was Arthur Payson Terhune, then Issac Asimov and Robert Heinelin. I think I passed along those authors to Eddie as he was growing up. Now it’s Dale Brown and Nora Lofts and John Sanford (along with a host of others!). All escapist literature for the most part. The rest of my reading is on the order of “The SQL Cookbook” or “SQL Server Administrator’s Guide”. I have a VB.Net book and a Java Scripting book, but haven’t cracked the covers on them yet – too important to cram down the SQL right now.ย
Don’t go to many movies, either. When we do, it’s usually a comedy or action/adventure film. Way too often anymore, it’s G rated animated moviesย ๐ย – guess we’re entering our second childhood
Aurora is here for her summer week at Kamp Kemar. Ken went to pick her up today when he got off work. He said she greeted him at the door with tail wagging and ran straight out to the truck to jump in the front seat. He told her she at least needed to say goodbye to her Mommy and her kid. She leapt out, ran to Angela, jumped on her, whirled and ran back to jump in Ken’s truck. Guess she was ready for her vacation! She’s made herself right at home.
It sure is wonderful to see my dogs happy and contented. While Aurora was tickled to come visit us, she’ll be equally thrilled when her Mom and Kid come back to get her at the end of the week. I’m so lucky to have owners like Angela, Janet, Erin and Janine and Karen who let me see my dogs from time to time. That means the world to me!
Tomorrow we start the big house-painting project. We have openly admitted to ourselves that this project may very well take the rest of the summer and into the fall to complete. Ken will have to do most of it since my knees will not let me go up and down ladders! Anyone who would like to wield a paintbrush for any amount of time (10 minutes, an hour, a day!) is welcome to join the party! We’ll provide liquid refreshment in whatever form you take and plenty of snacks ๐ย Not to mention you get to associate with some of the nicest dogs around!
Need to hit the sack — have to be well rested to begin the big painting project!
Love to all,
Margaret

I loved Asmov and Heinlein too!
I wish we weren’t so busy ourselves and could get by to see you with the girls more often. I was just looking at pictures of Rose from a year ago and I can’t believe what a difference there’s been. She is so much more playful and FAT now! Not like Star, of course, but she is certainly enjoying the priviliges of being the alpha bitch around here. ๐
I don’t suppose you remember where the bike came from. We had just moved to our new house on Colton and ther was a filling station near rhere and we signed up to win a bike, Well surprise of all surprises we won and it was at Christmas tome and so you got it from Santa.
Oh!! for the good old days.
I had no idea you read Heinlein and Asimov — a couple of my favorites!
And my bike’s not all that fancy! When I was at the bike shop, the owner was showing me some feather-light bikes — you could lift ’em with your pinky. They were *only* about $6k! ๐
Second childhood? I feel like I’m on my third or fourth now!
I have to admit, Colin, that it was your Dad who first introduced me to science fiction — not just Asimov and Heinelin but, Norton, and even Mr. Scientology himself, L Ron Hubbard ๐
My first husband and I actually lived about 5 miles from the Scientology home near 29 Palms, California. It wasn’t so big then, and only accepted MENSA members — somehow I don’t think Tom Cruise and wife are MENSA material Guess their criteria has lowered these days.
I’m glad to see you enjoying that bike while you’re still young enough! Keep up the good work!
Love,
Margaret (Auntie M)
