Daily Notes 08-31-2007
Hello everyone! Well, so far the dog show has gone like…well…a dog show. Butterfly was Winners Bitch on Thursday and 3rd out of 3 in her class today. Tigger was Reserve Winners Dog on Thursday and 2nd out of 2 in his class today. Today’s judge was one I thought would really like Butterfly — oh well — that’s the way of the game.
In today’s news, there was a story about a huge spider web in Texas at this park. It’s made by a species of spider that is usually very independent, but in this instance they have acted like a colony to the benefit of all members. They are long-jawed orb weavers and are about 1″ in diameter. They are related to what I’ve always called writing spiders, but which are actually Black and Yellow Argiope. This guy (or probably gal) has spun his web in my office window. I’ve had a lot of fun watching him/her catching bugs in its web and dispatching them with great alacrity. There’s another one on my back porch close to the light which is doing me a great service by keeping a lot of bugs out of the house.
Guess it’s time I was in bed. Good night all.Love,
Margaret

Now that’s a cool spider!!! I love photographing them — there’s just something awesome about their symmetry and gracefulness that captivates me.
Thanks, Colin — that’s a sweet thing to say about your old auntie 🙂
I do enjoy these spiders, but can’t say I enjoy them all. I love these guys’ colorfulness nad the neat webs they make. Even the humming birds have to come cehck the spider out when they visit the feeder. That’s pretty cool to watch, too.
